Hens van der Spoel

Hens van der Spoel was a core member of the post-war Amsterdam art scene. In 1946, he co-founded "De Groep" to move Dutch art away from rigid realism. He often used his partner, Nel Houtman, as a subject for his studies. His work Nel Houtman slapend op bed shows his preference for intimate, domestic scenes. He avoided the heavy ornamentation common in earlier Dutch traditions.

Biography

His artistic approach relies on a calligraphic economy of line. In works like Lijnen en stippen and Penseelstreken, he strips the subject down to its essence. He used ink and watercolour with a steady hand to create immediate, gestural marks. His figures, including Zittende vrouw met handen in haar schoot, appear as structural forms rather than detailed portraits. This method emphasises the physical movement of the brush across the paper.

These prints appeal to collectors who appreciate minimalist aesthetics. The restricted colour palettes and open space work well in modern homes. Works such as Vogelkooi or his views of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel provide a quiet atmosphere. They offer a sophisticated look without being distracting. His skill in capturing a subject with few strokes makes his work feel current.
