Fredericus van Rossum du Chattel

Fredericus van Rossum du Chattel earned the title of the painter of the Vecht due to his lifelong fascination with the river near Utrecht. While many of his contemporaries in the Hague School sought out the dramatic coastlines of Scheveningen, he preferred the quiet inland waterways. He was the son of the painter Jan Hendrik van Rossum du Chattel and received his formal training at the Hague Academy. His dedication to a single geographic area allowed him to record subtle seasonal changes with precision.

Biography

His approach combined the atmospheric qualities of the Hague School with a delicate touch in his watercolours. He often used a muted palette to capture the damp, misty climate of the Netherlands. Unlike the bold, broad strokes seen in the work of Georg Hendrik Breitner, Van Rossum du Chattel focused on the soft transitions of light on water. His compositions frequently featured narrow canals and pollard willows. These subjects reflect the influence of the French Barbizon painters who prioritised direct observation of nature.

Modern collectors value these works for their sense of stillness and balance. His paintings provide a window into the pre-industrial Dutch countryside. The small scale of many of his pieces makes them suitable for contemporary living spaces. His ability to render the transparency of water and the weight of a grey sky remains technically impressive. These prints offer a calm aesthetic that complements both traditional and modern interiors.
