Cosmo Alexander
Cosmo Alexander was a Jacobite supporter who fled Scotland after the 1745 uprising. He spent years as a wandering portraitist, working in Italy and London. He eventually moved to the American colonies and arrived in Philadelphia in 1766. He was the first teacher of Gilbert Stuart, the artist who later painted George Washington. Alexander introduced formal European portrait traditions to a colonial audience.
