Charles-Melchior Descourtis

Charles-Melchior Descourtis was a pupil of Jean-François Janinet, the man who pioneered the colour aquatint process in France. Descourtis did not just follow his teacher; he refined the process of using four distinct copper plates to produce a full range of tones. Each plate carried a different ink: blue, yellow, red, and black. This process required absolute precision during the printing stage to ensure the colours aligned perfectly.

Biography

His approach focused on the wash manner, a technique that mimics the appearance of watercolour washes. This allowed him to create soft transitions and delicate light effects. He often worked on narrative series, most notably the illustrations for the novel Paul et Virginie. These prints captured the emotional tone of the story through subtle shifts in hue rather than hard lines. His compositions like The Lover Surprised demonstrate his ability to balance technical complexity with a clear narrative.

Collectors today appreciate the soft palette and the historical accuracy of his costumes and settings. His prints offer a quiet elegance that complements traditional and contemporary spaces. Because he used a multi-plate process, the resulting prints have a unique depth that differs from modern digital reproductions. These prints belong to a period of French printmaking defined by technical innovation and romantic storytelling.
