Carlo Labruzzo

In 1789, Carlo Labruzzo embarked on an ambitious journey to document the entire length of the Appian Way. He accompanied the British antiquarian Sir Richard Colt Hoare from Rome toward Brindisi. Although poor weather and illness cut the trip short, Labruzzo produced hundreds of watercolours. These works recorded ancient monuments and tombs that were largely unknown to the wider European public at the time.

Biography

Labruzzo avoided the dramatic exaggerations common in the popular vedute of his era. He preferred a restrained, Neoclassical approach that prioritised topographical accuracy. His compositions often feature Roman ruins in their contemporary 18th-century settings. He painted crumbling masonry alongside grazing cattle and rural peasants. This documentary style provides a factual record of how these sites appeared before modern archaeological interventions.

Modern collectors value Labruzzo for his clean lines and subtle use of colour. His work brings a sense of order and historical perspective to a room. These prints offer a window into the Roman Campagna without the visual clutter of more decorative styles. His focus on the physical reality of the past makes his art a stable addition to contemporary interiors.
