André Lebrun

André Lebrun spent the majority of his career outside his native France. After winning the Prix de Rome in 1768, he accepted an invitation to Warsaw from King Stanisław August Poniatowski. He became the chief sculptor to the Polish court, a position he held for nearly thirty years. This role allowed him to oversee the decoration of major royal residences, including the Royal Castle and the Palace on the Isle.

Biography

His training under Jean-Baptiste Pigalle provided him with a strong technical foundation. He balanced the lightness of the late Rococo with the structural clarity of Neoclassicism. His work is defined by anatomical accuracy and a sense of controlled movement. He often produced terracotta models that captured the initial energy of a composition. These small-scale works show a level of spontaneity that is sometimes lost in the final stone versions.

Modern collectors appreciate his work for its historical transition. His drawings and sculptures represent a shift toward the Enlightenment values of reason and order. The clean lines and classical themes fit well in contemporary rooms that favour minimalist or traditional aesthetics. His prints offer a way to bring the atmosphere of an eighteenth-century royal court into a private home.
