A detailed portrait of a Dutch regent from 1675, capturing the austere style and civic dignity of the Dutch Golden Age.
This portrait is a detail taken from the larger group composition, Zes regenten en de binnenvader van het Oudezijds Huiszittenhuis te Amsterdam, painted by Pieter van Anraedt in 1675. The work depicts one of the regents of the Oudezijds Huiszittenhuis, a charitable institution in Amsterdam responsible for providing food and fuel to the city's impoverished residents. Van Anraedt, a painter active in Deventer and Amsterdam, was known for his sober and restrained approach to portraiture, which aligned with the values of the Dutch merchant class and civic administrators of the period.
The subject is presented in a traditional bust-length format, wearing the austere black clothing typical of seventeenth-century Dutch civic officials. The white collar provides a sharp contrast against the dark garments, drawing the viewer's attention to the sitter's face. The lighting is controlled and directional, creating soft shadows that define the contours of the face and the texture of the fabric. The background remains neutral, ensuring that the focus remains entirely on the individual's expression and character.
Group portraits of this nature were common in the Netherlands during the seventeenth century, commissioned by guilds, charitable organisations, and civic guards to document their leadership. While the original painting features multiple figures, this specific study captures the gravity and professional composure expected of a regent. The brushwork is precise, reflecting the artist's technical proficiency in rendering skin tones and the subtle variations in light across the sitter's features. This print offers an opportunity to examine the stylistic conventions of Dutch portraiture, where the emphasis is placed on dignity, social status, and the quiet authority of the sitter.
