A powerful example of 18th-century Zen calligraphy by Jiun Onkō, featuring expressive ink brushwork depicting a traditional Zen koan.
This work by the Japanese Buddhist monk Jiun Onkō presents a classic example of Zenga, or Zen painting and calligraphy. Jiun was a scholar of the Shingon school and a proponent of the 'Ten Virtues' movement, yet he is perhaps most recognised for his expressive, bold brushwork. In this piece, the characters are rendered with a deliberate lack of artifice, reflecting the Zen practice of direct transmission of truth beyond words.
The calligraphy refers to the famous koan concerning the 'cypress tree in the courtyard'. This koan originates from the teachings of Zhaozhou Congshen, a Tang dynasty master. When asked about the meaning of Bodhidharma coming from the West, Zhaozhou replied with the observation of a cypress tree. The brushstrokes here possess a raw, unrefined quality, prioritising the energy of the moment over technical perfection. The ink varies from deep, saturated black to dry, frayed edges where the brush has skipped across the paper surface.
Jiun Onkō utilised the brush to embody the state of mind of the practitioner. The characters appear to move across the vertical scroll, creating a sense of rhythm and spontaneity. The composition is balanced by the placement of the red seals, which provide a small, controlled contrast to the expansive, sweeping ink marks. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the depth of the sumi ink, allowing the viewer to observe the physical trace of the artist's hand. It is a piece that invites quiet contemplation, stripped of unnecessary ornamentation, focusing entirely on the immediacy of the brush and the weight of the philosophical inquiry it represents.
