A detailed seventeenth-century maritime study by Pieter Coopse, depicting sailing vessels navigating turbulent waters using pen and grey wash.
This drawing by Pieter Coopse captures the volatile nature of the North Sea, a common subject for Dutch marine artists of the seventeenth century. Executed in pen and brown ink with delicate grey washes, the work demonstrates the artist's ability to convey motion and atmospheric conditions through minimal means. The composition focuses on the interaction between the vessels and the turbulent water, with the ships appearing to struggle against the swell.
Coopse, active during the mid-seventeenth century, was known for his maritime subjects. His technique here relies on the fluidity of the wash to suggest the depth and movement of the waves, while the pen work provides the necessary structure for the rigging and hulls of the ships. The inclusion of a figure in the foreground provides a sense of scale, grounding the viewer in the scene. The muted palette, characteristic of the period's ink and wash drawings, focuses attention on the tonal variations rather than colour. This work reflects the broader interest in maritime commerce and the dangers faced by sailors, which were central themes in the Dutch Republic at the time. The drawing is a study of light and shadow, where the grey wash creates a sense of overcast skies and spray, effectively communicating the harsh conditions of the sea. The artist's signature, visible in the lower left, confirms his authorship of this maritime study.
