A precise oil painting of a zebra by George Stubbs, capturing the animal with scientific accuracy against a dark, atmospheric woodland backdrop.
George Stubbs, a painter celebrated for his anatomical precision and scientific approach to animal portraiture, produced this work in 1763. The subject is a zebra, an animal that was a rare curiosity in eighteenth-century Britain. Stubbs had the opportunity to observe the creature in person, as it had been presented to Queen Charlotte by the Governor of Cape Town.
The composition places the animal in a dark, wooded setting, which serves to emphasise the stark contrast of its black and white coat. Stubbs employs a restrained palette, allowing the pattern of the zebra to dominate the visual field. His technique reflects his background in anatomical study, as he captures the musculature and physical structure of the animal with great accuracy. Unlike many of his contemporaries who might have placed such an exotic subject in a more theatrical or fantastical environment, Stubbs opts for a grounded, observational style.
The painting is a fine example of the artist's ability to combine scientific observation with traditional portraiture techniques. The lighting is soft, directed towards the animal to draw the viewer's eye to the texture of the coat and the form of the body. The surrounding foliage is rendered with a muted tone, ensuring that the focus remains entirely on the zebra. This work provides a glimpse into the period's fascination with natural history and the collection of exotic species, while demonstrating the technical skill that defined Stubbs's career. The print captures the subtle gradations of the original oil painting, maintaining the balance between the dark, atmospheric background and the clear, defined lines of the zebra's markings.
