Yui: Satta Peak - Utagawa Hiroshige

This woodblock print depicts the coastal station of Yui, situated along the Tokaido road. It belongs to the Reisho Tokaido series, a collection produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the mid-nineteenth century. The composition focuses on the dramatic Satta Peak, a steep cliff face that drops directly into the sea. Travellers are shown navigating the narrow path at the base of the cliff, their figures protected by wide-brimmed hats against the elements. To the right, a small teahouse provides a vantage point for observers to look out over the water.

Hiroshige employs a clear, graphic approach to the scene. The sea is rendered with rhythmic, repeating lines that suggest the movement of waves against the rocky shoreline. The colour palette relies on distinct blocks of blue for the water, contrasted against the dark, textured forms of the cliff and the warm, neutral tones of the thatched structures. The sky transitions from a pale horizon to a darker band at the top, a technique often used in his prints to suggest the time of day or atmospheric conditions.

Unlike his earlier, more famous Hoeido series, the Reisho Tokaido prints are characterised by the use of clerical script (reisho) in the cartouches, which gives the series its name. The figures are depicted with a sense of quiet observation, typical of the genre. The print captures the physical geography of the Japanese coast, balancing the scale of the natural environment with the presence of human activity. This work provides a view of travel in the Edo period, documenting the specific topography of the Tokaido route while maintaining the stylistic conventions of the Ukiyo-e tradition.
