A dramatic Baroque etching depicting a young man fleeing a sea monster on a rocky coast, rendered with expressive line work.
This etching by the Flemish artist Louis de Deyster captures a moment of high tension. A young man, draped in flowing fabric, scrambles across a rocky shoreline to escape a large, serpentine sea creature emerging from the water. Deyster, who was also a painter and instrument maker, demonstrates a command of line and shadow in this work. The etching technique allows for a dynamic interplay between the dark, hatched areas of the rocks and the creature, and the lighter, more open spaces that define the figure of the man.
The composition relies on diagonal movement to convey the urgency of the flight. The man's posture, with his arms outstretched and his body angled away from the beast, creates a sense of immediate danger. The sea monster, rendered with textured scales and a menacing expression, occupies the lower left, grounding the scene in a mythological or allegorical context. Deyster's approach to the human form reflects the influence of the Italianate style, which he encountered during his travels. The anatomy is rendered with precision, while the drapery adds a sense of motion to the static image.
As a print, this work offers a glimpse into the graphic output of a versatile artist from the Southern Netherlands. The use of cross-hatching to build volume and depth is characteristic of the period, providing a tactile quality to the print. The scene avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the interaction between the two primary subjects. This print is an example of the narrative focus found in Baroque graphic arts, where the artist sought to capture a specific, dramatic instant. The work remains a study in movement and reaction, presented through the disciplined medium of the copperplate etching.
