The harimaze format was popular during the late Edo period, involving the printing of multiple distinct images on a single large sheet. These were intended to be cut out by the purchaser and collected in albums or used for decorative purposes. This specific section depicts the Yoshiwara station, the fourteenth stop on the Tokaido road.

Hiroshige employs a minimalist approach here, focusing on the atmospheric quality of the scene rather than architectural detail. A diagonal expanse of dark, muted tone dominates the composition, suggesting a hillside or a shadowed sky. Against this backdrop, a flock of birds is rendered in simple, repetitive strokes, creating a sense of movement and distance.
