A woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the lively Tenno Festival procession at the thirty-fifth station of the Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the Tenno Festival at Yoshida, the thirty-fifth station along the Tokaido road. It belongs to the Reisho Tokaido series, a later iteration of the artist's famous travel subjects, characterised by the use of reisho (clerical script) in the series title cartouche. The scene captures a lively procession moving along the riverbank, with participants carrying lanterns attached to long poles. Musicians play drums while others accompany them on horseback, creating a sense of movement and communal celebration.
Hiroshige employs a clear, balanced composition to organise the various figures. The foreground is occupied by the festival participants, while a crowd of onlookers gathers on the grassy bank to the right and in the bottom left corner, their presence indicated by a collection of hats and umbrellas. The artist uses a controlled colour palette, relying on soft blues for the water and sky, contrasted with the warm tones of the lanterns and the patterned garments of the figures. The trees provide a vertical anchor, framing the activity and separating the festival from the distant, darker horizon.
As a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, Hiroshige demonstrates his ability to document the customs of the Edo period. The print functions as a visual record of local festivities, documenting the attire, instruments, and social atmosphere of the time. The lines are precise, defining the forms of the figures and the textures of the natural elements without unnecessary ornamentation. This work offers a view into the travel culture of nineteenth-century Japan, focusing on the specific character of the Yoshida station during a period of public gathering.
