Katsushika Hokusai produced this woodblock print as part of his series, A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces, published around 1832. This series represents a departure from his earlier focus on the human figure, shifting instead toward the observation of natural phenomena. The composition centres on the vertical descent of the Yoro Falls, rendered with precise, linear strokes that suggest the weight and velocity of the water.

In the foreground, Hokusai includes figures to provide a sense of scale. Two travellers, sheltered by circular hats, observe the cascade, while a small thatched structure sits to the right. The artist employs a restricted palette, relying on variations of Prussian blue to define the water and the deep shadows of the basin. The surrounding rock formations are depicted with a lighter, ochre-toned wash, creating a contrast between the solid earth and the fluid motion of the falls.

Technically, the print demonstrates the sophisticated use of the bokashi technique, where ink is wiped or layered to create gradients. This is visible in the transition from the dark sky at the top of the print to the lighter mist surrounding the base of the waterfall. The inclusion of white flecks of spray, achieved through the careful carving of the woodblock, adds a sense of kinetic energy to the scene. Hokusai avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the structural geometry of the waterfall to dominate the frame.
