Beskrivning
A bold Post-Impressionist study by Paul Sérusier, featuring the simplified forms and flat, expressive colour planes characteristic of the Nabis movement.
Paul Sérusier was a central figure in the Nabis group, a collective of artists who sought to move beyond the observational constraints of Impressionism. This work, painted during his time in Brittany, demonstrates the shift toward synthetic painting methods. Rather than attempting to replicate the visual reality of the farm, Sérusier prioritises the arrangement of colour and form to convey a subjective experience of the scene.
The composition is defined by large, flat areas of unmodulated colour. The golden yellow of the farm buildings and the surrounding fields dominates the canvas, creating a sense of unity that flattens the pictorial space. Sérusier employs a simplified palette, using bold, non-naturalistic tones to define the architecture and the terrain. The dark, textured areas at the base of the composition provide a contrast to the brightness of the upper sections, grounding the image while maintaining the decorative quality characteristic of his work during this period.
By reducing the farm to its essential shapes, Sérusier invites the viewer to engage with the painting as a constructed object rather than a window into a specific location. The influence of Paul Gauguin is evident in the rejection of traditional perspective and the emphasis on symbolic colour. This approach allowed Sérusier and his contemporaries to explore the emotional potential of paint, moving away from the descriptive requirements of earlier movements. The work remains a clear example of the Nabis interest in synthesising memory and observation into a cohesive, decorative whole.
