Natalia Goncharova, a central figure in the Russian avant-garde, produced this work during a period of intense experimentation with light and form. The composition reflects the principles of Rayonism, a movement she co-founded with Mikhail Larionov. Rayonism sought to depict the spatial forms that arise from the intersection of reflected rays from various objects, rather than the objects themselves.

In this piece, the forest is deconstructed into a series of sharp, angular planes. The artist employs a palette dominated by ochre, deep forest green, and stark white to suggest the movement of light through foliage. The traditional representation of trees is replaced by a rhythmic arrangement of lines and geometric shapes, which create a sense of energy and motion. The dark, almost black background provides a contrast to the luminous yellow rays that cut across the canvas, suggesting the sun filtering through a dense canopy.

Goncharova was deeply influenced by both Russian folk art and the developments of European Cubism and Futurism. This synthesis is evident here, as the work balances a decorative, almost graphic quality with a rigorous analytical approach to visual perception. The painting does not aim to replicate the physical appearance of a woodland scene, but instead captures the sensation of light and energy within that environment.
