A refined diptych by Komai Genki depicting the historical figures Yang Guifei and Yanji, executed in ink and colour on silk.
This diptych by Komai Genki presents two iconic figures from Chinese history and literature, rendered in the refined style of the Maruyama-Shijo school. Genki, a student of Maruyama Okyo, adopted the delicate brushwork and observational precision characteristic of his mentor, while maintaining a distinct focus on the depiction of elegant women, or bijin-ga.
On the left, Yang Guifei, the celebrated consort of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang dynasty, is depicted alongside peonies. The peony, often associated with prosperity and feminine beauty in East Asian iconography, complements her graceful posture. On the right, the figure of Yanji is shown in a contemplative moment beside an orchid, a plant traditionally linked to scholarly refinement and purity. The composition of both scrolls relies on a balanced distribution of negative space, allowing the figures to occupy the silk with a sense of quietude.
Genki employs a muted palette, favouring soft earth tones and subtle washes of colour that harmonise with the aged silk ground. The line quality is fine and controlled, defining the folds of the robes and the facial features with precision. Unlike the more stylised woodblock prints of the period, these paintings reflect a closer engagement with naturalistic observation, a hallmark of the Maruyama-Shijo approach. The figures are not merely decorative elements; they are rendered with a specific attention to posture and expression that suggests a narrative depth. This diptych demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise classical Chinese subject matter with the aesthetic sensibilities of late eighteenth-century Kyoto. The scrolls remain a clear example of the period's interest in historical themes, executed with a technical restraint that prioritises clarity and poise.
