A refined portrait by Alfred Stevens depicting a woman in a kimono with a flowering plant, capturing the aesthetic influence of Japonisme.
Alfred Stevens, a Belgian painter active in Paris, produced this work during a period when European artists were deeply engaged with Japonisme. The title, Yamatori, refers to the Japanese practice of collecting wild plants, which aligns with the subject holding a decorative planter. Stevens was known for his technical precision and his ability to capture the textures of fine fabrics, a skill clearly visible in the rendering of the kimono and the metallic sheen of the jewellery.
The composition focuses on a young woman in profile, her gaze directed toward the flowering plant. The lighting is controlled, creating a soft contrast between the subject and the dark, atmospheric background. This technique draws the eye to the details of the costume and the delicate features of the sitter. Stevens often used such figures to explore the intersection of fashion, exoticism, and domesticity, themes that were popular in the late nineteenth-century Parisian art market.
The painting demonstrates the artist's mastery of oil paint, particularly in the handling of light on the silk fabric and the subtle tonal shifts across the skin. The inclusion of the ornate planter adds a layer of material culture to the portrait, suggesting a refined interior setting. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on grand historical narratives, Stevens preferred these intimate, staged scenes that allowed for a focus on aesthetic harmony and material beauty. The work remains a representative example of the late nineteenth-century interest in integrating Eastern motifs into Western portraiture, reflecting the broader cultural exchanges of the era.
