Beskrivning

A refined woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting two women engaged in the traditional craft of weaving on a floor loom.

This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai captures a quiet, domestic scene of textile production. Two women are depicted operating a traditional Japanese floor loom, their movements synchronised with the mechanical demands of the apparatus. The composition is structured around the geometric frame of the loom, which provides a rigid contrast to the fluid, organic lines of the women's robes and the pine tree positioned to the right. Hokusai employs a restrained palette, allowing the focus to remain on the technical process of weaving and the posture of the figures.

The print reflects the interest in daily labour and craft that appeared in Ukiyo-e works during the late eighteenth century. Hokusai, who is often associated with his later, more dramatic views of Mount Fuji, here demonstrates his early mastery of figure drawing and spatial arrangement. The perspective is slightly elevated, offering a clear view of the warp and weft threads as they are manipulated. The inclusion of the pine tree suggests an outdoor or semi-open setting, a common trope in period prints to bridge the gap between interior domesticity and the natural world.

The print is characterised by clean, precise lines and a balanced distribution of negative space. The figures are rendered with a sense of calm concentration, their faces showing the typical features of the period. The subtle application of colour, particularly the soft tones of the fabric and the muted greens of the foliage, creates a harmonious visual experience. This work provides a glimpse into the material culture of Edo-period Japan, documenting the tools and techniques of a trade that was essential to the economy and daily life of the time. It is a fine example of Hokusai's ability to elevate a mundane subject through careful observation and technical skill.

Artist Biography

Katsushika Hokusai

Katsushika Hokusai was a visionary Japanese artist whose influence stretched far beyond his lifetime. Born in 1760 in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Hokusai became world-renowned for his mastery of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings. His most iconic work, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, is instantly recognisable across the globe and embodies his lifelong fascination with the power of nature. Hokusai’s ability to capture the dynamic tension between beauty and impermanence is a hallmark of his style, deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics and Buddhist philosophy.

Throughout his prolific career, Hokusai produced thousands of prints, sketches and illustrated books. He continually reinvented his style and identity, even adopting over 30 different artist names as his work evolved. His bold compositions, innovative use of perspective and striking colour palettes redefined Japanese printmaking. Hokusai's famed series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji showcases not just technical mastery, but a spiritual reverence for landscape and everyday life. His work depicted everything from serene rural scenes to mythological creatures and bustling cityscapes.

Hokusai's legacy transcended Japan, profoundly shaping Western art during the 19th century through the movement known as Japonisme. Artists like Monet, Van Gogh and Whistler drew direct inspiration from his compositions and sensibilities. Today, Hokusai is celebrated not only as one of Japan’s greatest artists, but as a bridge between Eastern and Western visual culture. His art continues to captivate modern audiences with its fluid lines, narrative depth and timeless exploration of the human connection to nature.
