A striking Expressionist work by Emil Nolde, depicting two women and a Pierrot figure in the intense, saturated colours of the Berlin cabaret scene.
Emil Nolde, a central figure in German Expressionism, produced this work in 1917. The painting captures a scene from the Berlin cabaret culture, a subject that occupied the artist during his time in the city. The composition features two women flanking a central Pierrot figure, their forms rendered with the aggressive, gestural brushwork characteristic of Nolde's mature style.
The colour palette is intentionally jarring. The skin tones of the women are rendered in saturated, unnatural yellows and oranges, while the Pierrot is painted in cooler, ghostly blues and whites. This contrast creates a sense of psychological tension. The figures appear crowded together, their expressions bordering on the grotesque, which reflects the artist's interest in the raw, unrefined energy of urban nightlife. Nolde avoids smooth transitions, preferring instead to apply paint in thick, visible layers that give the surface a tactile quality.
Unlike his contemporaries who sought to rationalise the human form, Nolde prioritised emotional immediacy. The Pierrot, a traditional figure of melancholy and performance, is here reduced to a mask-like presence between the two women. The lack of spatial depth forces the viewer to focus entirely on the faces and the interplay of colour. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to transform a mundane social setting into a scene of unsettling intensity. The heavy application of paint and the distortion of features are typical of his approach to portraiture, where the objective is to convey the internal state of the subjects rather than a realistic likeness. This print captures the texture of the original oil paint, preserving the raw energy of Nolde's brushwork for a contemporary setting.
