A refined Ukiyo-e triptych by Kitagawa Utamaro, capturing women and children in a serene waterside setting with elegant lines and soft colours.
This triptych by Kitagawa Utamaro depicts figures gathered near water, a subject that allows the artist to explore the grace of the human form within a natural setting. Utamaro is recognised for his mastery of the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the beauty of women. In this composition, he employs his characteristic elongated proportions and refined line work to capture the elegance of his subjects. The women are dressed in patterned kimonos, their postures varied to create a sense of movement and interaction. One woman reaches towards a dragonfly, while others attend to children playing in the shallow stream. The background elements, such as the flowing water and flowering shrubs, are rendered with a delicate touch that complements the figures without overwhelming them. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the Edo-period woodblock process, where multiple blocks were used to achieve the subtle colour palette. Utamaro often used these scenes to provide a glimpse into the daily lives and leisure activities of the period, balancing the stylised aesthetic of the time with a sense of gentle observation. The composition is divided into three panels, yet it functions as a unified scene, with the figures arranged to guide the viewer across the width of the work. The soft, muted tones of the original print have been preserved, offering a view into the aesthetic sensibilities of late eighteenth-century Japan. This piece remains a representative example of Utamaro's ability to blend portraiture with atmospheric detail, maintaining a focus on the subtle expressions and gestures of his subjects.
