A refined 1768 French Rococo engraving by Augustin de Saint-Aubin, depicting an allegorical scene of a crowned woman receiving floral and fruit offerings.
This etching and engraving, dated 1768, represents the refined graphic output of the French Rococo period. Augustin de Saint-Aubin, a member of a prominent family of engravers, executed this plate after a design by Jean-Baptiste Le Prince. The composition displays the characteristic lightness and decorative sensibility associated with eighteenth-century French printmaking.
The scene is allegorical, featuring a central female figure adorned with a mural crown, suggesting an embodiment of a city or a personification of abundance. She is surrounded by figures who offer symbols of fertility and harvest, including a garland of flowers and various fruits. To the right, an older, bearded figure sits near a small altar or brazier, adding a classical, perhaps mythological, dimension to the narrative. Above, a figure drives a chariot pulled by horses through the clouds, a common motif in the period to denote celestial or divine presence.
Saint-Aubin employs a delicate line quality, using fine cross-hatching and stippling to create subtle gradations of tone. The figures are arranged in a theatrical, shallow space, typical of the period's preference for staged, graceful interactions. The work reflects the era's fascination with classical themes, rendered with a light touch that avoids heavy moralising. The precision of the burin work allows for the clear rendering of textures, from the soft clouds to the drapery of the garments. This print serves as an example of the collaborative nature of eighteenth-century print production, where the roles of the designer, or 'inventor', and the engraver were distinct yet complementary. The work remains a clear window into the aesthetic priorities of the French Enlightenment, where art often sought to provide a harmonious and visually pleasing experience for the viewer.
