A fine engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi after Agostino Carracci, depicting the biblical scene of the woman taken in adultery with classical precision.
This print by Francesco Bartolozzi reproduces a composition originally painted by Agostino Carracci. The scene depicts the biblical narrative of the woman taken in adultery, a subject frequently explored by artists of the Italian Baroque and later periods. Bartolozzi, a master of the stipple and line engraving techniques, demonstrates his technical precision here through the controlled application of cross-hatching and tonal variation.
The composition is structured around a central architectural space, with figures arranged in a theatrical manner. To the left, a group of men, including Christ, engage in a discussion, while the accused woman stands to the right, her posture conveying a sense of resignation. A seated figure in the foreground provides a counterpoint to the standing group, anchoring the perspective. The architectural setting, featuring arched doorways and classical columns, reflects the influence of the Bolognese school of painting.
Bartolozzi was a prolific printmaker who spent much of his career in London, where he became a founding member of the Royal Academy. His ability to translate the painterly qualities of oil works into the medium of engraving made him highly sought after for reproducing works from the Royal Collection and other private galleries. This particular print captures the dramatic tension of the narrative while maintaining the formal balance characteristic of the period. The fine lines and subtle shading define the drapery of the garments and the expressions of the figures, demonstrating the artist's command over the copper plate. The work serves as a record of the original Carracci painting, which was held in the Zampieri Palace in Bologna before entering the British Royal Collection.
