A detailed etching by Ferdinand Landerer depicting a woman engaged in an alchemical or occult ritual at a kitchen stove.
This etching by Ferdinand Landerer depicts a scene steeped in the iconography of alchemy and witchcraft. A woman, dressed in simple, rustic attire, stands before a stone hearth. She holds a scorpion with a pair of tongs, poised to drop the creature into a small pot resting upon the fire. The atmosphere is heavy with suggestion: a skull and a bone lie on the floor near an open book, while a small, rodent-like creature hangs from a hook above. These elements align with eighteenth-century depictions of the occult, where the domestic kitchen space is transformed into a site of ritual or forbidden experimentation.
Landerer employs a precise etching technique to define the textures of the scene. The cross-hatching creates depth within the stone masonry of the stove and the folds of the woman's apron. The light source, emanating from the fire, casts shadows that heighten the sense of drama. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the woman countered by the horizontal elements of the hearth and the scattered objects on the ground. The inclusion of the skull and the hanging animal serves as a visual shorthand for the macabre, a common trope in European printmaking of the period that explored the boundaries between science and superstition.
As an Austrian printmaker, Landerer was active during a period when such genre scenes were popular among collectors of curiosities. The work avoids sentimentality, opting instead for a narrative that invites the viewer to question the nature of the woman's activity. Is she a practitioner of dark arts, or merely a subject of folklore? The ambiguity remains central to the appeal of the print. The fine lines and controlled shading demonstrate the technical skill required to render such a complex, thematic scene on a small scale. This print offers a glimpse into the darker side of eighteenth-century visual culture, where the mundane and the supernatural frequently intersected.
