Wivenhoe in Essex follows the tidal Colne with a waterfront shaped by fishing and shipbuilding, where colourful houses and moored yachts keep the river close to daily life.
The Colne at Wivenhoe has supported fishing, shipbuilding and port activity since the late Middle Ages. This Essex town’s riverside was central to its development, giving the waterfront a working history that reaches well beyond the small boats moored there today.
Pale gabled houses line a broad empty quay, with blue and cream walls catching gentle light. Dinghies sit below the edge while yachts gather farther along the channel. Their masts draw fine verticals above long reflections in the water. Lilac shadows soften the white clouds, and full trees on the opposite bank suggest a still summer morning beside the river.
