Joris Hoefnagel was a central figure in the transition from medieval manuscript illumination to the scientific observation of the natural world. This study of a white horse demonstrates his precise approach to draughtsmanship and his mastery of vellum as a medium. The animal is captured in a dynamic, rearing pose, with its mane and tail rendered in fluid, calligraphic strokes that suggest movement against a pale, atmospheric sky.
