A detailed nineteenth-century study of a winter scene featuring cattle and a large tree, rendered in graphite and grey wash by Jacobus Pelgrom.
This monochromatic study by Jacobus Pelgrom captures a quiet, wintry day in the Dutch countryside. Executed in 1842, the work demonstrates the artist's technical command of graphite and wash, employing a range of grey tones to suggest the cold, diffused light of the season. The composition is anchored by a large, bare-branched tree that dominates the centre, its skeletal form rendered with precise, delicate lines. Beneath its boughs, a small group of cattle grazes along a path, accompanied by a lone figure. The background recedes into a soft, atmospheric haze, suggesting a distant horizon and a sense of stillness.
Pelgrom, a Dutch artist active during the nineteenth century, often turned his attention to the rural environment. His approach to this scene avoids dramatic artifice, favouring a direct observation of nature. The use of wash allows for subtle transitions between the shadowed areas of the foreground and the lighter, more ethereal sky. The texture of the bark, the sparse foliage, and the slight dusting of snow on the ground are conveyed through careful layering of media. This piece reflects the period's interest in the quietude of the natural world, documenting the daily life of rural inhabitants alongside the changing seasons. The work is signed and dated by the artist in the lower right corner, providing a clear point of origin for this observation of winter life. It remains a fine example of mid-nineteenth-century Dutch drawing, where the focus is placed upon the interplay of light and form within a familiar, unadorned setting.
