Kimon Loghi, a Romanian painter of Greek descent, produced this evocative study of a winter scene. The composition captures the quiet stillness of a cold season, focusing on the interplay between the snow-covered ground and the muted tones of the sky. The palette relies on soft greys, pale blues, and subtle hints of ochre and rust within the trees, reflecting the artist's interest in atmospheric conditions rather than precise topographical detail.
Loghi was trained in Munich, and his work often displays the influence of the Symbolist movement, which favoured mood and suggestion over literal representation. In this piece, the brushwork is loose and painterly, allowing the texture of the canvas to contribute to the overall effect. The trees, rendered in thin, vertical strokes, provide a rhythmic contrast to the expansive, flat expanse of the snow in the foreground.
