A classical genre scene by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, depicting three women in an interior space, captured in a moment of quiet curiosity.
Who is it? (1903) is a characteristic work by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, a Dutch painter who settled in Britain and became a member of the Royal Academy. The painting depicts three women in a classical setting, a recurring theme in the artist's later career. One figure stands on a bench, peering over a marble partition to observe an unseen event, while her two companions wait below, their expressions conveying curiosity and anticipation.
Alma-Tadema was known for his meticulous attention to archaeological detail and the textures of his subjects. In this composition, the artist renders the folds of the women's stolae, the polished surface of the marble, and the soft light filtering into the interior with precision. The palette is dominated by muted earth tones, punctuated by the deep blue of the standing figure's ribbons and the soft green of the seated woman's dress. The architectural elements, including the fluted column and the marble wall, provide a sense of structure that balances the informal poses of the figures.
This work reflects the artist's interest in domestic life within the Roman Empire, a subject that occupied him for much of his professional life. Rather than depicting grand historical narratives, Alma-Tadema focused on quiet, intimate moments that allowed him to explore light, material, and human interaction. The painting is signed and inscribed with the opus number CCCLXXXII, consistent with the artist's practice of numbering his works chronologically. The composition invites the viewer to share in the mystery of the unseen visitor, creating a narrative tension that is resolved only by the viewer's own imagination.
