A striking example of geometric abstraction by Irene Rice Pereira, featuring layered linear forms and high-contrast monochrome geometry.
Irene Rice Pereira was a significant figure in American abstract art, known for her exploration of light, space, and the physical properties of materials. White Lines is a representative example of her work during the early 1940s, a period when she experimented with layering materials to create depth. By painting on multiple sheets of glass, she achieved a three-dimensional quality that traditional canvas could not provide. This technique allowed light to pass through the layers, casting shadows and creating a sense of movement within the composition.
The work features a rigorous arrangement of geometric forms, including parallel lines, rectangles, and circular motifs. These elements are set against a high-contrast black background, which makes the white linear markings appear to float in space. The composition balances structured, grid-like sections with more fluid, calligraphic marks. This interplay between order and spontaneity is a hallmark of Pereira's approach to abstraction. She sought to reconcile the mechanical precision of the modern age with the organic nature of human perception.
In White Lines, the viewer observes a complex interplay of transparency and opacity. The layered glass construction forces the eye to navigate different planes, effectively turning a two-dimensional surface into a spatial experience. Pereira's interest in physics and optics is evident here, as she manipulates the viewer's focus through varying line weights and densities. The work avoids representational imagery, instead inviting an engagement with the formal qualities of light and geometry. It remains a clear demonstration of her technical innovation and her contribution to the development of mid-century American modernism.
