A powerful etching by Käthe Kollwitz from her Peasants' War series, capturing the sombre, physical intensity of a worker preparing a tool for use.
Käthe Kollwitz produced this etching, titled Whetting the Scythe, as part of her Peasants' War series. The work depicts a figure hunched over the task of sharpening a blade, a motif that carries heavy connotations of impending conflict and manual labour. Kollwitz utilised soft-ground etching to achieve a textured, almost painterly quality, which allows the shadows to obscure the figure's face and focus the viewer's attention on the physical exertion of the hands.
The composition is tight and claustrophobic. By cropping the image closely around the subject, Kollwitz removes any sense of background or context, forcing an immediate engagement with the act of preparation. The lines are heavy and expressive, reflecting the artist's interest in the harsh realities of the working class in early twentieth-century Germany. The dark, murky tones created through the etching process contribute to a sombre mood, typical of her graphic output during this period.
Kollwitz often drew inspiration from historical events, such as the German Peasants' War of the sixteenth century, to comment on the social conditions of her own time. In this print, the act of whetting the scythe serves as a metaphor for the readiness for revolt. The figure is anonymous, representing the collective struggle of the peasantry rather than a specific individual. The focus remains on the tactile quality of the metal against the stone and the weathered hands of the worker. This print demonstrates her technical mastery of printmaking, where she manipulated the plate to create deep blacks and subtle grey gradations, effectively conveying the weight and gravity of the subject matter without resorting to unnecessary detail or ornamentation.
