Western Horseman, painted in 1917, represents a shift in the career of Carlo Carrà. Having moved away from the kinetic energy of Futurism, Carrà began to explore the stillness and enigmatic qualities of Metaphysical Art. This work displays a mannequin-like figure mounted upon a horse, set against a structured, architectural background. The forms are simplified into geometric planes, creating a sense of frozen time rather than motion.
The composition relies on a restricted palette of ochre, terracotta, and muted greens. These earthy tones contribute to the sense of antiquity and permanence within the scene. The horse and rider appear as objects in a staged environment, stripped of their naturalistic context. By employing these rigid, doll-like figures, Carrà invites the viewer to consider the objects as symbols rather than literal representations of a horseman.
Carrà was a central figure in the development of Italian modernism. His transition to this style occurred during his time in Ferrara, where he collaborated with Giorgio de Chirico.
