A delicate charcoal and watercolour study of a Dutch meadow featuring young trees protected by wooden frames, rendered in a muted, observational style.
This drawing by Coba Steenhoff, titled Weiland met bomen, captures a quiet moment in the Dutch countryside. The composition focuses on a row of young trees, each protected by wooden frames, set against a flat, open meadow. Steenhoff employs a combination of charcoal and subtle watercolour washes to define the scene. The charcoal lines provide the structure for the trees and their protective enclosures, while the muted tones of the wash suggest the atmosphere of a damp, overcast day.
Steenhoff, a contemporary of the Hague School, often turned her attention to the rural environment. Her approach here is observational and direct. She avoids unnecessary detail, preferring to record the essential forms of the trees and the horizontal expanse of the field. The wooden frames, which appear in various stages of decay or construction, add a rhythmic element to the foreground. This repetition guides the viewer's eye across the paper, creating a sense of distance that stretches toward the horizon line.
The paper retains a sense of its original texture, and the application of colour is restrained, adhering to a palette of greys, browns, and pale blues. This choice of medium allows the artist to balance the graphic quality of the sketch with the softness of the environment. The work reflects a period in Dutch art when artists sought to capture the character of the local terrain through modest, honest depictions. It is a study of form and light, demonstrating Steenhoff's ability to render the specific qualities of a rural setting without resorting to sentimentality. The signature in the lower right corner confirms the artist's hand, placing this work within her broader body of drawings that document the changing nature of the Dutch provinces during the early twentieth century.
