A 17th-century Dutch drawing by Abraham Furnerius, featuring a winding forest path rendered in pen and brown wash.
Abraham Furnerius, a pupil of Rembrandt, produced this study of a woodland path during the mid-17th century. The work demonstrates the influence of his master, particularly in the application of brown wash to create atmospheric depth and the use of pen lines to define the structure of the trees. The composition draws the viewer along a winding track that disappears into a dense cluster of foliage, a common motif in Dutch Golden Age drawings of the period.
The artist employs a restricted palette of sepia tones, relying on the varying density of the wash to suggest light and shadow. The foreground trees are rendered with darker, more deliberate strokes, while the background elements fade into a lighter, more ethereal wash. This technique allows for a sense of recession, guiding the eye through the scene without the need for complex colour. The paper itself remains visible in the lighter areas, providing a natural highlight that balances the darker ink work.
Historically, this drawing was once attributed to Rembrandt himself, as evidenced by the inscription in the upper right corner. Modern scholarship has corrected this, identifying the hand of Furnerius through stylistic comparison with his other known works. The drawing reflects the Dutch interest in the natural world, capturing a quiet, unpopulated moment in a forest. It is a study of light and form, showing the technical proficiency of a young artist working within the tradition of the Rembrandt school. The work remains a fine example of 17th-century Dutch draughtsmanship, valued for its economy of means and its ability to evoke a specific mood through simple tonal variations.
