A striking etching by Willem van Konijnenburg, featuring a water mill rendered through geometric forms and expressive cross-hatching.
This etching by the Dutch artist Willem van Konijnenburg captures a water mill through a lens of structural abstraction. Van Konijnenburg, known for his involvement with the Symbolist movement, often moved away from direct observation toward a more conceptual representation of form and light. In this work, the mill is reduced to its essential geometric components: the heavy masonry of the walls, the circular rhythm of the wheel, and the interplay of shadow across the stone surfaces.
The artist employs a dense network of cross-hatching and parallel lines to define the volume of the building. Rather than focusing on the rustic charm typically associated with such subjects, the composition emphasises the weight and permanence of the architecture. The light source is directional, casting deep shadows that obscure parts of the structure, which creates a sense of mystery and quietude. The verticality of the mill is balanced by the horizontal lines of the water and the surrounding terrain, resulting in a stable, almost monumental presence.
Van Konijnenburg was a versatile draughtsman, and his graphic work often reflects a preoccupation with the underlying order of the natural and built environment. This print demonstrates his ability to manipulate the etching plate to achieve varying degrees of tone, from the stark white of the paper to the deep, velvety blacks of the shaded recesses. The work is a study in contrasts, where the mechanical nature of the mill meets the atmospheric quality of the surrounding space. It is a piece that rewards close inspection, revealing the technical precision behind the artist's seemingly spontaneous mark-making. This print is a representative example of early twentieth-century Dutch graphic art, reflecting a period when artists were increasingly interested in the expressive potential of line and shadow to convey mood and structural integrity.
