A precise 1781 watercolour by Francis Towne, capturing the dramatic alpine scenery between Chiavenna and Mount Splügen with clear lines and layered washes.
Francis Towne produced this watercolour during his extensive tour of Italy and the Alps in 1781. The work depicts a dramatic alpine scene, capturing the sheer scale of the rock formations and the force of the water as it descends between Chiavenna and Mount Splügen. Towne is recognised for his distinct approach to watercolour, which relies on clear, linear outlines and carefully layered washes to define form and structure.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who favoured atmospheric blurring, Towne maintained a rigorous clarity in his compositions. He used pen and ink to delineate the contours of the mountains and the jagged rocks, providing a sense of architectural solidity to the natural environment. The palette is restrained, focusing on earthy browns, muted greys, and pale blues, which allows the viewer to focus on the geometric arrangement of the terrain.
In the foreground, small figures cross a bridge, providing a sense of scale against the imposing verticality of the cliffs. The composition is balanced, with the waterfall acting as a diagonal force that guides the eye through the scene. This work reflects the eighteenth-century interest in the sublime, where the power of nature is presented with both precision and awe. Towne's technique of applying flat washes of colour creates a sense of light and shadow that remains consistent across the entire surface of the paper. His work was largely overlooked during his lifetime, but he is now appreciated for his unique contribution to British watercolour painting and his ability to translate the ruggedness of the European mountains into a controlled, graphic medium.
