A late Impressionist study of light and reflection on the water garden at Giverny, featuring floating lilies and the mirrored sky.
Claude Monet painted this work in 1903 as part of his extensive series focusing on the water garden at his home in Giverny. By this stage in his career, Monet had moved away from traditional perspective, choosing instead to focus on the surface of the water and the interplay of light and reflection. The composition removes the horizon line, forcing the viewer to look directly down into the pond.
The painting captures the reflection of clouds on the water surface, interspersed with the floating forms of water lilies. Monet uses short, broken brushstrokes to build the image, allowing colours to blend optically when viewed from a distance. The palette consists of deep purples, blues, and greens, which contrast with the lighter, softer tones of the reflected sky. This approach creates a sense of depth that is not derived from linear perspective, but from the layering of colour and the suggestion of space within the water.
Monet spent his final decades refining this subject matter, exploring how changing light conditions altered the appearance of the pond. This specific work demonstrates his interest in the ephemeral nature of the sky as it appears on the water. The lack of a clear boundary between the sky and the pond surface creates an immersive experience. The painting remains a primary example of his late style, where the physical reality of the garden becomes secondary to the atmospheric effects of light and colour on the water surface.
