This engraving by Hendrick Goltzius, titled Aqua, forms part of a series depicting the four elements. Produced in 1586, the work demonstrates the technical mastery of the Haarlem school of printmaking. Goltzius employs a sophisticated system of swelling and tapering lines to model the human form, a technique he refined to achieve a sculptural quality on a two-dimensional surface.

The composition features a central female figure, an allegorical personification of water, leaning against a large vessel from which a stream flows. Her posture reflects the elongated proportions and graceful, artificial poses characteristic of Northern Mannerism. In the background, a smaller narrative scene depicts the baptism of Christ, providing a theological counterpoint to the classical personification in the foreground. The sky is filled with dramatic, swirling clouds, while the light emanating from above suggests a divine presence.

Goltzius was a central figure in the dissemination of Mannerist style across Europe. His ability to translate the complex musculature and fluid drapery of contemporary painting into the medium of engraving allowed his work to reach a wide audience of collectors and fellow artists. The Latin inscription at the base of the print provides a classical framing for the image, connecting the elemental nature of water to the structure of the world. This print remains a primary example of the intersection between classical allegory and the technical rigour of late sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking.
