This etching by Giulio Carpioni belongs to a series depicting the four elements. The composition presents a mythological scene centred on the personification of water. A female figure sits at the right, pouring liquid from a vessel, while the surrounding space is populated by sea deities, putti, and aquatic creatures. Carpioni, a Venetian artist, was known for his interest in classical themes and his ability to render complex, crowded scenes with a sense of fluid movement.
The etching technique allows for a delicate handling of light and shadow. Fine, hatched lines define the musculature of the figures and the texture of the water, while the background remains relatively sparse to keep the focus on the central narrative.
