A nineteenth-century Dutch educational woodcut featuring thirty illustrated vignettes with moral verses, designed for the instruction of children.
This hand-coloured woodcut by the Dutch printer Jan Oortman (Sr.) represents a genre of popular educational material common in the early nineteenth century. The title, which translates to 'What you see here, dear youth, happens for instruction and for joy', encapsulates the dual purpose of these prints. They were designed to provide moral guidance and practical knowledge to children through a series of vignettes.
The composition is organised into a grid of thirty distinct scenes. Each small panel depicts a specific activity or moral lesson, accompanied by a short verse in Dutch. The subjects range from daily chores and trade practices to cautionary tales about behaviour and nature. The visual style is functional and direct, typical of mass-produced broadsheets intended for wide distribution among the public. The application of colour is rudimentary, often spilling outside the lines of the woodcut blocks, which adds to the charm and historical character of the piece.
Oortman operated in Amsterdam, producing various prints that functioned as visual primers for the young. These sheets were often pinned to walls in homes or schools. They offer a glimpse into the social values and domestic life of the Netherlands during the period. The work provides a record of contemporary dress, tools, and pastimes, presented in a format that prioritises clarity and narrative accessibility over artistic refinement. By combining text and image, Oortman created a portable classroom that encouraged literacy and moral development simultaneously. This print remains a specimen of early visual communication, demonstrating how information was disseminated before the advent of modern photography and high-speed printing technologies.
