War (Triptych) - Otto Dix

A powerful triptych by Otto Dix, this work uses the format of a religious altarpiece to depict the grim reality of the First World War.

Otto Dix completed this large-scale triptych between 1929 and 1932. The work draws upon the historical tradition of religious altarpieces, yet it replaces sacred iconography with the visceral reality of the First World War. Dix, a veteran of the conflict, utilised a technique reminiscent of Old Master painters to document the destruction he witnessed.

The left panel depicts soldiers marching into the distance, shrouded in a grey, atmospheric haze. The central panel presents a chaotic scene of trenches, featuring decaying bodies and skeletal remains suspended in a desolate, ruined landscape. The right panel shows a soldier carrying a wounded comrade away from the carnage, while the predella, or the bottom horizontal panel, displays a row of soldiers sleeping in a bunker, their bodies arranged in a manner that evokes a tomb.

Dix employs a palette of muted earth tones, ochres, and greys to convey the grim atmosphere of the front lines. The composition is structured to guide the viewer through the progression of the war, from the initial march to the aftermath of death and the final, uneasy rest. By adopting the triptych format, Dix invites a comparison between the suffering of the soldiers and the traditional depictions of the Passion of Christ. The work avoids romanticised notions of heroism, focusing instead on the physical and psychological toll of industrialised combat. The figures are rendered with a stark, unflinching realism that characterises the New Objectivity movement, reflecting the disillusionment prevalent in Weimar Germany during the interwar period. This piece remains a significant document of twentieth-century history, providing a direct visual account of the trauma experienced by a generation.
