A traditional Japanese ink painting on silk depicting two wagtails near narcissus flowers, executed in the kacho-ga style.
This ink painting on silk, attributed to the Japanese artist Eison, belongs to the kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on the depiction of birds and flowers. The composition features two wagtails perched upon a rocky outcrop, positioned near a cluster of narcissus blooms. The artist employs a monochromatic ink wash technique, utilising varying densities of ink to suggest form, texture, and depth without the use of colour.
The wagtails are rendered with precise, delicate brushwork, capturing their posture and alertness. The narcissus leaves and petals are depicted with fluid, calligraphic strokes, demonstrating the economy of line characteristic of ink painting from this period. The background remains largely unadorned, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the avian subjects and the flora. The use of negative space is intentional, creating a sense of balance and stillness.
A red seal is visible in the lower right corner, providing a point of identification for the artist. The work is mounted in a traditional scroll format, with decorative textile borders that frame the central image. The aged silk support contributes to the muted, earthy tone of the piece, which has softened over time. This work reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where the observation of nature was filtered through a lens of restraint and technical proficiency. The arrangement of the birds and the placement of the narcissus suggest a careful study of natural forms, translated into a stylised, ink-based language. The painting invites quiet observation, consistent with the meditative qualities often associated with East Asian ink wash traditions.
