A detailed 1778 etching and engraving by Carl Wilhelm Weisbrod, depicting a rural archway and travellers in the environs of Sienne.
This etching and engraving, titled Vue des environs de Sienne, captures a rural scene with the technical precision characteristic of late eighteenth-century printmaking. Carl Wilhelm Weisbrod, a German engraver who spent much of his career in Paris, collaborated with the French master Jacques-Philippe Le Bas to produce this work. The print is dated 1778 and features an elaborate dedication to the Marquis de Brunoy, complete with a heraldic crest supported by lions in the lower margin.
The composition focuses on a stone archway that frames a path leading into the distance. To the left, a rustic building with weathered walls stands amidst dense foliage. A group of travellers with livestock occupies the foreground, adding a sense of daily activity to the quiet, rural setting. The artist employs varied line weights to differentiate between the rough texture of the stone masonry, the soft foliage of the trees, and the finer details of the figures. The use of cross-hatching creates deep shadows beneath the arch and within the foliage, providing a sense of volume and atmospheric depth.
Weisbrod was known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of original drawings into the medium of print. This work reflects the period interest in picturesque views and the idealisation of rural life. The inclusion of the coat of arms and the formal dedication indicates that the print was intended for a sophisticated audience, likely as part of a collection of topographical views. The print remains a fine example of the collaborative nature of print production in the eighteenth century, where the skills of the draughtsman and the engraver combined to document the European countryside for collectors and enthusiasts of the era.
