A study of the Breton coast by Maximilien Luce, capturing the sea and distant town of Paramé through textured, impressionistic brushwork.
Maximilien Luce, a prominent figure within the Neo-Impressionist circle, produced this study of the Breton coast during his travels in the 1890s. Paramé, a seaside resort near Saint-Malo, provided the artist with a subject that allowed for the exploration of light and atmospheric conditions. The work captures the horizon line where the sea meets the sky, rendered through short, directional brushstrokes that characterise his approach to the divisionist technique.
The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The foreground consists of the sea, painted in varying tones of green and blue, which suggests the movement of water through texture rather than precise detail. The background features the distant silhouette of the town, where small dabs of colour represent buildings and structures against the pale, hazy sky. Luce avoids heavy outlines, preferring to build form through the juxtaposition of colour patches.

Maximilien Luce was not only a painter but also a committed anarchist, and his political beliefs often influenced his artistic choices. He depicted working-class life and social unrest, offering a perspective rarely seen within the Pointillist movement. Luce embraced Pointillism, or Neo-Impressionism, following the lead of Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. This technique involved applying small, distinct dots of colour to the canvas, which then blend in the viewer's eye to create a unified image. Unlike Seurat, who sought a scientific precision, Luce used Pointillism to capture the energy and dynamism of modern life, particularly the industrial world. His paintings demonstrate a fascination with light and colour and an interest in capturing the atmosphere of his subjects.
Today, Luce's art appeals to collectors interested in works that combine aesthetic beauty with social consciousness. His scenes of working-class life offer a window into a specific historical moment, while his Pointillist technique provides visual appeal.
