A stark, expressive ink drawing by Dutch CoBrA artist Lucebert, featuring a distorted female figure rendered with minimalist, gestural lines.
Lucebert, born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the Dutch post-war avant-garde. As a poet and painter, he operated within the CoBrA movement, which prioritised spontaneous expression and a rejection of traditional aesthetic constraints. This ink drawing demonstrates his characteristic approach to the human form, where anatomy is secondary to the raw, immediate gesture of the pen.
The figure is rendered with a stark economy of line. A heavy, solid mass of black ink defines the hair, contrasting with the sparse, skeletal contours of the body. The face is reduced to a singular, piercing eye, while the torso and limbs are suggested through fluid, almost jagged strokes. There is a deliberate lack of background or environmental context, forcing the viewer to engage directly with the distorted silhouette. The mark-making is varied, shifting from thick, saturated pools of ink to fine, scratchy textures that suggest a sense of unease or psychological tension.
Lucebert often drew inspiration from children's art and folk traditions, seeking a form of expression untainted by academic training. This work reflects that philosophy, appearing unrefined and direct. The composition is vertical and precarious, with the figure seemingly suspended in a void. By stripping away detail, the artist focuses on the essential energy of the subject. The ink bleeds slightly into the paper in places, adding a tactile quality to the work. This piece offers a clear view into the artist's graphic practice, where the act of drawing functions as a form of visual poetry, prioritising emotional resonance over representational accuracy.
