A historical study of revolutionary decorations on the Hogesluis in Amsterdam, featuring symbolic columns representing Liberty, Fraternity, and Equality.
This watercolour and ink study by Noach van der Meer (II) documents the ephemeral public decorations installed on the Hogesluis in Amsterdam during the summer of 1795. The work captures the spirit of the Batavian Revolution, which saw the establishment of the Batavian Republic following the collapse of the Dutch Republic. The composition features three classical columns, each wrapped in bands of red, white, and blue, representing the revolutionary ideals of the era.
The columns are topped with distinct symbolic objects: a liberty cap, a star-shaped finial, and a triangle. These elements align with the text inscribed across the base, which reads 'VRYHEID BROEDERSCHAP GELYKHEID' (Liberty, Fraternity, Equality). The artist employs a precise, architectural draughtsmanship, typical of eighteenth-century topographical and historical recording. The use of a muted, neutral background allows the primary colours of the revolutionary flags to stand out with clarity.
Van der Meer (II) was a prolific engraver and draughtsman, and this piece serves as a visual record of the temporary structures erected to celebrate the political shift in the Netherlands. The work is preserved within the Atlas Amsterdam collection, reflecting the importance of documenting urban changes and public celebrations. The clean lines and balanced arrangement of the columns provide a clear, didactic presentation of the revolutionary themes. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the late eighteenth century, where classical motifs were repurposed to communicate modern political aspirations to the public. The simplicity of the design reflects the urgency and directness of the revolutionary message, stripped of unnecessary ornamentation to ensure the core values remained legible to all citizens passing over the bridge.
