A fine etching by Claude Henri Watelet depicting the Holy Family on their journey to Egypt, executed as a study after Rembrandt.
This etching by Claude Henri Watelet depicts the biblical narrative of the Flight into Egypt. The composition shows the Holy Family in transit: Mary sits atop a donkey, cradling the infant Jesus, while Joseph leads the animal forward with a walking staff. The figures are rendered with a focus on the tactile quality of their garments and the modest nature of their journey. The background features a suggestion of foliage and a large tree, providing a sense of enclosure for the travellers.
Watelet, a French writer and amateur artist, was known for his interest in printmaking and his association with the Enlightenment circles of his time. This work is a copy after an original etching by Rembrandt van Rijn, specifically referencing the Dutch master's treatment of the subject. Watelet's approach demonstrates a clear study of Rembrandt's technique, particularly in the use of hatching to create shadow and form. The lines are delicate, reflecting the eighteenth-century interest in the expressive potential of the etching needle.
The print captures a quiet, humanised moment of the journey. Rather than focusing on the divine nature of the figures, the artist presents them as weary travellers navigating a rural path. The inclusion of the number '5' in the lower corner and the handwritten annotation 'copia naar B52' (copy after B52) on the original plate or margin indicates its status as a study or reproduction of a specific catalogue entry, likely referencing Bartsch's catalogue of Rembrandt's prints. This piece offers a glimpse into the historical practice of artists learning through the direct imitation of masters, preserving the stylistic nuances of the seventeenth-century Dutch school within a later French context.
