This study by Johannes Bronkhorst captures the precise observation characteristic of Dutch natural history illustration during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Bronkhorst, a Dutch artist active in the period following the height of the Dutch Golden Age, specialised in the depiction of insects and small creatures. His work reflects the scientific curiosity of the era, where the classification and documentation of the natural world became a pursuit for both scholars and collectors.
The composition features three distinct subjects: a peacock butterfly, a moth, and a bumblebee. Each specimen is rendered with careful attention to anatomical detail, from the distinct eye-spots on the butterfly wings to the fuzzy texture of the bumblebee. The artist employs a delicate application of watercolour and gouache, allowing for subtle gradations of colour that mimic the natural appearance of the insects. The background remains sparse, a common convention in scientific studies of the time, which directs the viewer's focus entirely to the biological forms.
Bronkhorst often signed his works with the initials J.B.F., as seen in the lower left corner of this sheet. The use of light and shadow beneath each insect provides a sense of physical presence, suggesting they are resting upon the paper surface.
