A 1777 aquatint and etching by Maria Catharina Prestel, depicting an allegorical scene of Virtue surrounded by symbolic figures, after a drawing by Jacopo Ligozzi.
This print by Maria Catharina Prestel, dated 1777, is an aquatint and etching reproduction of a drawing by the Italian Mannerist artist Jacopo Ligozzi. Prestel was a skilled printmaker based in Nuremberg, known for her ability to translate the tonal qualities of drawings into the medium of print. This work demonstrates her technical proficiency in capturing the soft, atmospheric transitions of the original composition.
The scene presents an allegorical narrative, common in the period, depicting Virtue at the centre of a struggle between competing forces. The figures are arranged in a cloud-like formation, suggesting a celestial or conceptual space rather than a physical location. Virtue is flanked by Love, Error, Opinion, and Ignorance, each represented by distinct physical gestures and expressions. The composition relies on the interplay of light and shadow, characteristic of the aquatint process, to define the musculature and drapery of the figures.
Prestel often worked from the collections of prominent patrons, and this print reflects the eighteenth-century interest in reproducing Old Master drawings for a wider audience. The monochromatic, sepia-toned palette provides a sense of unity to the complex arrangement of bodies. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical accuracy, typical of the Neoclassical interest in classical form, while the subject matter retains the dramatic tension associated with the Mannerist tradition of the original drawing. The print serves as a record of the artistic dialogue between the sixteenth-century Italian original and the eighteenth-century German printmaking tradition.
